I knew that I had neither the strength, tools nor workspace to handle big sheets of MDF, and so started thinking of other ways of doing it. Eventually, I settled on building a framework from wood, and cladding it with mountcard. Just to be different, I decided to build it from the inside out.
The next step, of course, was to work out the floor layouts, and here I called on my sister to help me. Gradually, we calculated, often by remembering where the furniture was placed, the dimensions of the various rooms, and at last I was ready to start drawing up detailed plans.
I have used this website to record how I built the house, so to follow the sequence of events please click the Next buttons on each page.
The foundations were laid on 27th February, 2005, and looked like this:
The house was in the middle of a terrace, on two floors, and I eventually decided that it should be 22 inches wide, by 31.5 inches deep. As I wanted there to be front rooms and back rooms, it would necessarily have to have opening panels at both ends, which meant putting it onto a turntable. I had an old television table on casters, and a friend fixed a big sheet of MDF to this for me.
